Beth L'Chaim is a new Messianic Jewish fellowship here on the Delmarva peninsula. We meet every other Friday at 7 PM at Living Stones Church, 31695 Winterplace Parkway Salisbury, MD 21804. During the Feast of Chanuka, we had a celebration and service which was well attended. From 6 to 7 PM, we had a party for the children and adults. Joanie Adkins, one of most knowledgeable members explained the story of Chanuka. The children played the traditional Chanuka game "dreidel" and we ate "Soufganiot" (jelly donuts) in the Chanuka tradition of eating things fried in oil. At 7PM, we had a Chanuka sabbath service (only our second service), My wife Liz lit the Chanuka menorah. We sang some traditional songs such as Maoz Tzur and Hatikva but also some Marty Goetze.

At our services we read from the "Torah", "Haf-torah" and "B'rit Chadasha" (New Testament or Covenant). The message which always tries to "harmonize" the three passages, explained that the story of Joseph in Genesis is a picture of Yeshua (Jesus). The prophet Zechariah fortold that only when the Jewish people were able to follow the feasts and commandments would the "the Servant, the Branch" (a prochecy of the Messiah) be able to come. Then Yeshua did come as the scripture in Matthew fortold. The story of the birth of John the Immerser (baptist) and Yeshua in Luke also fortells exacly when John and Yeshua were conceived and born. John was conceived in May/June which would put his birth at Passover, because he is the fulfillment of the prediction of Elijah coming before the Messiah. Yeshua was conceived on CHANNUKA! This puts his birth at the middle of the Jewish month of Tishri or Sukkot!

Shalom,

Liz Cassutto
